Recent years have seen Globalization coming under tremendous strain. With the economic and political rise of China, the increase in economic nationalism, and ongoing global trade wars, the global economic system is on the precipice of massive change. This course will explore the competing views of globalization, that it has hurt the poor, been bad for the environment, and is governed by undemocratic institutions against the view that is the only means by which developing countries will be able to grow and eradicate poverty. We will explore different visions for the future of the system, focusing on the fragmentation of international trade, the challenges in the international financial system, and the rise of geoeconomics and industrial policy.
