Family enterprises are the most common organizational form worldwide and come with unique complexities. Advisors must skillfully manage not only business and ownership challenges but also the evolving dynamics of multigenerational families. With an expected $180 trillion transition in the coming decade and $70 trillion already in progress, family enterprises present significant opportunities for skilled advisors. This course addresses the critical need for specialized training in advising family enterprises, highlighting the gap between advisors' typical structural focus and the relational priorities of family businesses. Research shows that misalignment in advising approaches can lead to counterproductive outcomes. The course focuses on developing essential skills for advising family enterprises, fostering long-term value, and understanding the ethical considerations involved. Through six 90-minute campus sessions, a weeklong immersive experience in Italy, and a final debrief, participants will gain firsthand cultural insights into collectivism's impact on family identity and decision-making. This course bridges the gap between standard advisory practices and the specific needs of family enterprises, preparing advisors with the relational, professional, and value-based competencies essential for success in this field. Travel to Italy will take place during spring break, March, 15-22, 2025.
