This course examines Generative AI technologies through both a technical and social lens. In the first part of the course, students will develop hands-on experience with the technical workings of large language models (LLMs). This will range from fundamental aspects such as understanding transformers and training a small language model from scratch, to applications where prompt engineering, retrieval-augmented generation, and fine-tuning enhance reliability and safety. Additionally, students will explore LLM deployments where operational research (OR) tools can be used to reduce operational costs. In the second part of the course, students will examine the social and ethical implications of these technologies and examine the impact of these technologies on topics like content creation, labor markets, and security. Designed for students interested in advancing AI technology responsibly, this course encourages critical thinking about AI’s broader effects. Participants will gain practical skills and a deeper understanding of how AI tools can be developed and utilized ethically and effectively in various sectors.
